Environmental Group

The group has been re established after a few years of inaction. Tony Lake was the inspiration and enabler of the Group and did not survive his demise and the effect of covid.

We met in Morrisons cafe on the 12th February 2025.

Those present: Nick Platt, Denise Harris, Llyn Arthur, Mair Evans and Cressida Lloyd

Apologies: Paul West and Anne Howells.

Matters discussed;

  1. Monthly meetings will be held where members will introduce a subject for discussion
  2. It has been proposed that we meet in the Monty club in Broad Street.
  3. For this group, the environment shall encompass Planet Earth and all that exists therein that is affected by anthropomorphic activity and climate change.

Next Meeting will be held 2.00pm on Friday 21st March and Cressida will introduce a discussion on Plastics, followed by a meeting on 11th April to discuss the Hydrogen economy introduced by Nick

Meeting held on 21st March 2025

Present: Cressida Lloyd, Denise Harris, Paul West, Llyn Arthur, Nick Platt

The subject we focussed on was plastics and its effect on the environment. Cressida opened the subject with a presentation covering the reason why plastics are so bad for us and the environment.

How much we produce.

Macro plastic waste and micro plastic waste and the food chain

What can we do about it?

A vast subject That we individually seem not to be able to do much about. Where are the alternatives? The subject will continue to return to. More questions than answers.

Meeting held on 11th April

Present: Not Recorded

The hydrogen economy was the subject for discussion and Nick gave a presentation covering

Hydrogen is the most abundant material in the universe. It is the cleanest form of energy available to us. The fuel cell uses Hydrogen and oxygen to produce water and electricity. This was developed by Francis Bacon from the concepts of Sir William Groves in 1889. NASA led with the use of hydrogen fuel cell in the Apollo missions. Germany has developed a hydrogen powered submarine and China a hydrogen powered train in 2015. There are 2 commercially produced vehicles Toyota Mirae and the Hyundai Nexo with the Riversimple Alpha Under development locally. The reason hydrogen has not been developed further is the problems with distribution.

Further meetings have been held through the summer but not recorded.

Meeting held on 22nd of September 2025

Present: Denise Harris, Llyn Arthur, Paul West, Mark Marshall-Howe, Cressida Lloyd, Mair Evans, Nick Platt

We discussed the reasons that the climate change deniers use

  1. Climate change is always happening. Yes, But not at the rate of change being experienced
  2. Climate models are unreliable. 97% of climate scientist do not agree.
  3. No scientific consensus. Rubbish!
  4. Natural cycles, not caused by human activity. The are not looking at the evidence

Al Gore “An inconvenient truth” and “Our Choice” demonstrate the opposite. What would have happened if he had become President of USA?

Next meeting to be held on 17th November 2.00pm at Monty club will discuss The Fishing Industry.
